I’ve been very quiet on here as I’ve been learning to multitask a baby + toddler as well designing new resources + products. Lots of exciting things to share soon. All the teaching resources + printables are still available to download, many are still FREE but if you want access to them all you can pay for a Premium subscription, it’s still only £11.99 for the year. I’ll be increasing the price soon so get yourself a good deal whilst you can. Are there any printables you would like to see soon? . . . .
Salt Dough • we made salt dough letters (+numbers) using this recipe: 1/2 cup salt 1/2 cup of water + 1 cup of flour. Mix together until forms a dough, shape as you wish! We only made a few letters using alphabet cutters; you could make them freehand into your own letters but this is a great way to have a set to play with at home. These were quite small so only took an hour to dry in the over at 120 degrees. Once they were cool he painted them. Great for a sorting activity, letter + name recognition, matching.. How would you use the salt dough letters? This recipe is in my Phonics + Play Dough Play Pack available for purchase at harrietandviolet.com perfect for supporting teachers in schools. . . . . . .
Tuff Spot • My dad calls this a cement mixing tray so was confused why it was in my living room. I love it, so many different activities to use it for, many of which are easy to set up. This one is from over two years ago, just chucked some plastic balls into it. If you’re looking for something more challenging then check out my blog a couple of activities on there, when I had time to write a little more. I’m now looking through past photos of baby R, I’ll share some on stories with simple tuff spot set ups. Hope you’re having a fun Monday! . . . . . . . .
Chinese New Year • more printables being added for a Reception, Year one or Two classroom. A4 word mats to support early writing + reading. There are two different types of word mat in this PDF, one with a white background + one with a cream background, the cream on supports children with visual stress (Meares-Irlen Syndrome). Look out for activity ideas for the next week for Valentine’s Day, Pancake Day + New Year. . . . . . . .
The power of other children’s drawings • this picture has been on our fridge drawn by a 3 year old. My son loves looking at it and said he want to do one just like that. So we got out the pens and he started to make his own picture. Not working in a classroom I miss watching how children learn from each other, it’s so important to encourage it. Just sharing pictures from other children is important. . . . . #markmaking.
Valentine • I’ve been uploading some new Valentine printables to my website harrietandviolet.com . These could be used in a little number games (addition, counting, ordering) or the blank ones could have letters, sounds or numbers added to them. How would you use this in an activity? . . . . . .
Imaginative Play • Sticky foam this stuff is great for messy play. Children can build their hand muscles by squishing, pulling, twisting, squashing the foam together. I made some numbers and my son did copy these and place next to them. He is more creative than me so made a castle, blasters + tried to play a golf game. Sometimes with give children set ideas but they need to be free to try things themselves. This stuff would work on its own in a tuff spot or tray for a fine/gross motor activity. What would you make with the sticky foam? . . . . . .
Phonics • I created the Phonics Play Pack as a quick reference for teachers when they are planning, or for parents to set up a little activities at home. I find it really hard sometimes to retain interesting ideas, so this is a great way to have them all in one place. Included are 40 different phonic games. They are aimed at Early Years Foundation Stage as well as Year 1 and 2. Challenges and tips are included to help differentiate the games for the individual needs of your child or class. If you want to see more ideas you can purchase the Phonics Play Pack from harrietandviolet.com or you can download for FREE if you’re a premium member of harrietandviolet.com . . .
Fresh play dough • ah this time last week it was unmixed and not played with. Now it’s a golf game (see stories). Have a great new week, whether you’re returning to work or starting something new. Today I’ll be waiting for a nap time to start designing my new teaching resources. . . . . . .
YAY 2018 • It’s the start of a new year and the end of my maternity leave. Exciting challenges ahead. I’m embracing Harriet + Violet full time as well as looking after my baby + toddler – *so full time actually means nap times. I’m looking forward to connecting with more teachers + parents, continue to create inspiring educational printable resources, blogging more ideas to use in the classroom or at home. This year I will be developing my graphic design skills, any tips? Any educational resources you would like to see in the future, drop me a DM. . . . .
• Thank You • 2017 has been a great year for harrietandviolet.com . This year I introduced my new website, premium membership, hundreds of new printable resources + new features. I look forward to sharing a lot more in 2018, BIG thanks for all the support, Michelle . . . . . .
Expecting any jewellery this Christmas? If not why not have ago making your own with your child. You could try using this little jewels and play dough combined, roll the play dough to make necklaces, jewels, rings. You tend to have a few sparkly bits hanging around at Christmas time, could you combine these to make anything? . . . . . . .
