Ice Play With the days being warmer I’ve been using ice a lot. I found it really encouraged talk; vocabulary, adjectives and describing what he was doing. Swipe to see . •First one is playdough cutters, letters + numbers into a cake tin to freeze – great to identify difference between numbers + letters as well as locating letters in their name. •My son is really into shiny jewels so have just popped this in water and glitter to freeze – The jewels can be reused. •I had some ice I’d forgotten at Halloween, I’d popped in plastic bats, food colouring and glitter into sandwich bags and frozen them. These make larger blocks of ice perfect for smashing open. • The last picture shows chalks being drawn onto the ice, this is something he did himself. What a great idea! What other ways have you used ice? . . . . . . . . . . .
Sensory Play • Last week I ordered from @oursensorykids shop, @oursensoryshop some recipe cards . Have you checked out Jordan’s fantastic site? She now also designs, makes and sells sensory story sacks. Sadly the June ice-cream on is sold out but you can still place an order for July’s Train bag. Check out the tag to for some amazing ideas. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Phonics • odd one out • Yes I’m using the @imagistones again! They’re great for phonics games. This one is super simple, children can say the items, which sound is the odd one out? Which have the same sound at the beginning of the word It’s so important for children to not rush learning phonics and spend time playing games, listening, singing songs and nursery rhymes. Being able to listen is just as important. If you want more phonics inspiration, did you know I made a Phonics Play Pack? Available (https://harrietandviolet.com/downloads/phonics-play-pack/) in the link in my bio. Lots of games and printables to help with the Year One Phonics Screener. If you have any phonics questions DM or message below. . . . . . .

Phonics Flashcards • I love the illustrations but that’s not the only reason why these are good. Each card is double sided with image and a 3 letter word. This includes CVC words which are great to start with eg. cat, dog, fox, mop etc. You can also use them when teaching about digraphs eg. c_ow, b_oy, b_ee, ow_l How do you use flashcards at home? If you’re not sure what digraphs are have a read of my blog post What is phonics? With the link in my bio. . . . . .

Alphabet • Love this Alphablock book. Great for phonics, it’s good to show the alphabet and talk about the letter sounds but also their name. This is a hands on book which I love. You can feel the letter shape, talk about the word and describe the picture. Swipe to see. Do you know of any good alphabet books? I’ve shared a couple more in stories. . . . .
