Setting up a Year 1 Classroom – quick printable resources guide

I just thought I’d write a quick list of all the things you may use in a Year 1 classroom to start you off. You could have themes for different areas or just one theme running in your classroom, there are so many different ways to do it. I have linked to some of my printable resources on H+V. I would include actual resources but this guide is mainly for printables.

Printable resources for the tables/resources for children to have access to:

Displays:

Start with display lettering and pop them up to give the different zones.

PSED:

  • Class guidelines or rules – create with the children
  • Posters sharing good learning
  • Inclusion – think about the children who made need their own learning area, what extra prompts are needed? What could extend or support them?
  • What to do if you need help
  • Birthday display

Challenge Areas:

  • Set up challenge areas, thinking skills, literacy, maths and phonics
  • Use table tops or window sills to place little challenges around the classroom, sometimes there are spare minutes – jazz the area with a little fabric

Literacy:

  • Super sentence display area e.g. This is a super sentence
  • High frequency words
  • Phonics area – display phonics they have learnt in EYFS as well as new ones.
  • Literacy display area for writing – including exciting things for the children to mark make with as well as a place to display their lovely learning
  • Sound buttons or recording devices
  • Reading area or book corner – Read here for further details
  • How to hold a pencil prompt
  • Handwriting prompts – using school policy

Maths:

  • Have a large hundred square
  • Numicon – display and items
  • Examples of operations and the different vocabulary
  • Large number line
  • Odd and even numbers
  • Counting in 2s, 5s, 10s then extend to 3s etc
  • Both 2D + 3D shape posters
  • Properties of shapes
  • Measure – access to rulers etc
  • Time – access to clocks, large clock on display
  • Days of the week
  • Months of the year
  • Seasons

Expressive arts area:

  • Space to share vocabulary used in the first term
  • Colours
  • Share ideas from different artists
  • Use cheap frames to place on the board ready to frame some children’s art work
  • Sound areas e.g. having music instruments, names, play music

PE area:

  • What days are PE sign etc
  • Examples of sports + movements
  • How to get changed, PE kit etc

This is only a small list to get started, throughout the year you can change and add the printables when needed.
